This delicate, three-figure model pole features a seabird, frog, and killer whale. The pole is mounted on a round slice of alder wood as a base. Although this pole is indicated in pencil on the back to be of Tlingit origin, it is almost certainly the work of a Ditidaht artist from Vancouver Island.
Totems from Canadian First Nations were often sold on steamships heading to Alaska and even in curio shops in Alaskan port towns. This ambiguity is the likely cause of this discrepancy. The angular carving and bold painted forms (particularly the large eyes) are diagnostic features of Ditidaht and Nuu-chah-nulth carving from this period. An excellent example of an early model pole. 14"H.
