Southern Plains War Shield

Southern Plains War Shield

Southern Plains war shield of fire hardened buffalo hide with faded reddish brown and yellow paint having image of horse above center, medicine bundle, and several slits from steel arrows. Stake holes around outer perimeter are still visible where tied over smoldering fire in the ground for shrinking and hardening. Shield was probably larger by more than 1" during period. Stylized horse with spirit lines. Small bundle remains intact. This is an actual battle piece having been struck twice by steel tipped arrows and once by a lance or bullet. The 16 1/2"D is indicative of Southern Plains vs. Northern, where the shields were larger.

PERIOD: First Half 19th Century

ORIGIN: Great Plains - Unknown, Native American

SIZE: 16 1/2"D
