Tlingit Multifigure Totem

Tlingit Multifigure Totem

This is a Tlingit totem pole created in the 19th century in Sitka, Alaska. This pole does not appear to have been completely finished but is excellently designed and was likely painted black by the maker for an impatient customer or perhaps one leaving on a scheduled steamship. Painting poles black was a way that carvers mirrored popular argillite poles by Haida artists, but was also a neat way to put a nice finish on their work. Bought from family - four generations. 17"H

ORIGIN: Northwest Coast - Tlingit, Native American
